The Longest and Coldest Winter of Beijing

by Josh

I had witnessed the first snow fall in Beijing last year at early November, now in mid-March the snowy weather is still troubling me and the temperature is still below zero degrees. It is definitely the longest winter in Beijing.

One of my friend said he used to believe the climate change was just nonsense talk, but after this winter he is a firm believer of the global climate change. He was born and raised in Beijing, he remembered clearly that back in the year of 2001, he had not seen any snowflakes in the whole winter, "people were talking about the warm winter at that time", but 10 years later the extreme weather had been the central topic wherever I went and talk with local people.

Beijing is in northern part of China, the Chinese living in those areas were using central heating system to warm the people's house and working place. While in the south part of the country, winter is rather short, mainly began at the Chirstmas time till early January.

Not only it is the longest winter of the city, it is also the coldest winter. According to the local wheather broadcasting institution, it is the coldest winter in the near 50 years. Of course, I caught a cold under such weather and one night I had to go to the local hospital for some medicines. I will never foget what I have seen in the hospital, numerous people were sitting in the clinical room waiting for their treatment, though you got your emergency treatment, you still have to wait up to 15 minutes before you see the docter. The docter told me he had been working overtime for soaring number of the people who were knocked down by the cold.

After mid-March, no central heating was available in the city and it seems local people would have to wait quite some time in the freezy whether and pray for the spring time.
